My Review

I'm not much of a reader, but Mosaic was definitely a book that I enjoyed.  As an Amy Grant fan since the Heart in Motion days, reading through the stories brought back so many memories of how each song has a special place in my own journey through life.  For others who have listened to Amy's music since the 90's, you will enjoy hearing the stories behind the songs, and getting insight into what inspired Amy to write the songs that have been so special to all of us.  If you're a die hard fan, this is a book not to miss.

However, for the die hard fan, chances are, you've heard 75% of the stories already either through Amy's concerts, newsletters, interviews, or from other fans.  There is not much new material that hasn't already been said.  That is some of the beauty of Amy Grant.  She has shared her personal life with us fans for many years.  In conversations with her, she's been honest, open and candid about whatever subject the fan asks about.  I think it's that personality of hers that draws so many of us to her.  I would note however, while Amy's been candid about a wide variety of topics, the level of depth of the discussion is not much more than a candid discussion with an acquaintance, as opposed to a soul wrenching heart to heart with a long time friend.

I would not recommend the book to those long time fans from the 80's.  There is not much insight into the mid 80's when she was the Christian pop princess, and not much insight into the drug days of Gary Chapman; in fact, while he is mentioned in the book several times, it would not be easily apparent to the reader that she was married to Gary approximately double the length of her marriage to Vince based on the quantity of discussion about each man.  If you are looking for that level of depth, you'll need to search the message boards or elsewhere.  The book also doesn't get into a deep discussion of what led to her divorce from Gary Chapman, but instead focuses on her happier life today with Vince Gill.

All in all, the book is a must have for a die hard fan (even though you've heard 75% of the stories already), but likely a boring read for non hardcore fans.  I would give it a solid B.
