Gospel: Amy Grant, Legacy
Hymns & Faith (
) Christian pop's best-known singer needed to
make this album of 18th- and 19th-century hymns, not only to commemorate 25
years in the music business but also as a way to refocus herself and her generally
conservative audience after a very public divorce and remarriage. Grant lets
soft-pop arrangements of songs such as Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing
and This Is My Father's World unfold almost organically, pushing them
only occasionally, as she does when she turns Nothing But the Blood into
a white-soul shuffle sung as a duet with country-singer husband Vince Gill.
Gill's stamp on the album is unmistakable: He serves as co-producer, wrote one
of four new songs, co-wrote another and plays guitar on nearly every track.
Not that that's a bad thing. Brian Mansfield
