He was one of Nashville's biggest stars. She was the first lady of Christian music. When AMY GRANT and VINCE GILL stepped into the recording studio to sing a duet, sparks flew. But there was one problem: They were both married to other people.
"I felt like I knew him instantly ... I was so drawn to him ... I think that a part of me just loved him instantly," says the 41-year-old Grant.
Grant and Gill, 45, confess that it wasn't until they discovered each other that they found true happiness. Tonight on ET, get a sneak peek at tonight's "Primetime Thursday" special, airing at 10 EDT on ABC, which tells the true story of the obstacles these songbirds faced in their second chance at love.
"I closed the doors and said, 'Does God really heal? Can he really heal me?'" admits Grant. "And you think you're just asking an innocent question, but it comes from so deep inside of you that, suddenly, you're just a wounded animal."
The country crooner and the Christian crossover artist met in 1993 when Gill invited Grant to appear with him on a Christmas special. Married since 1982, Grant struggled with her religious convictions to keep her union with singer/songwriter GARY CHAPMAN together. But after a temporary crisis of faith she finally realized she could follow both her beliefs and her heart. She got a divorce and married Gill in March 2000, who had divorced his own wife, JANIS OLIVER, in 1997.
Still, the couple's reputation was raked through the coals in the tabloids. "The bottom line is I've never felt the need to try to convince everybody," says Gill. "All I can do is tell the truth from my vantage point and my side of the story. For me to try to tell the other side is disrespectful. So, I never felt concerned about convincing the rest of the word of my righteousness or if my place was right or wrong."
Now, in their "Primetime" interview, Grant and Gill talk about their divorces, their new life together and how their little baby girl has cemented the bonds of their extended family.
